Celebration

airplanes landed all afternoon
dignitaries on board..
practicing their fake smile

hammers on the new roof
you raced with daylight.. and the next storm..
our date forgotten

a test of the cannons scared me
and the other chickens..
we all crowed

darkness fell slowly
held at bay by the throngs..
gathering gossip for tomorrow

with the first flash high in the sky
eruptions of Oh's and Ah's turned
into loud cheers and clapping

with the jubilation of strangers echoing
through the night..
we joined hands in celebration....

Nothing-

Nothing wrong
Nothing right
Now I'm on the Nothing diet

Nothing old - nor
Nothing New
Nothing for both me and you

Nothing lost- or
Nothing found
Nothing Nothing all around

Nothing ventured
Nothing Gained
Nothing Nothing all the same

Nothing Now and
Nothing then
Nothing Nothing till the end

Gullah life is made

cast into new daylight
the hudu spell is torn away
rest easy then this night

bridges came and baskets sold
the younguns moved to town
rich men came and stole our land
again to trod us down

But some have stayed to tell the tales
of how our world began
of lands and cultures far away
before a man owned a man

{this is a time of year when we desperately miss our
loved ones.. and my list of missing loved ones has grown
by leaps and bounds this year...}

~ Bobby's Last Dance ~

Looking at his hands
praying no one noticed
how they trembled.
He was feeling his age.
Life catching up with him.
Needing a left handed smoke.
He had peeked out back
Every one was in attendance.
Nosy bunch. His sisters kids.
Bull dogs he had called them.
The Girls weren't too bad,
he almost liked one of them.
But those four boys. Bull dogs.
Even he had been bitten.
Fighters every single one.
Better left alone.
Made him proud to be kin.
They would argue over his gift.
Him making monkey faces
as they fought to get his dishrags
with his hard earned money
hidden away on the inside.
She always wrapped them for him
laughing together like old times
as they chose her prettiest paper.
He loved her like no one else.
"Oh my sweet sister!" he smiled
thinking about their life. Twins.
Her husband was a wonderful man.
Their love for each other pure.
He had never found the dream
love they shared. He had tried.
God knows he had tried.
"Hurry up!" his Partner called.
"We need you to Dance."
Strut Miss Lucy. A children's game.
Every year they played silly games
But he liked getting the prizes.
With a wink and a nod at himself
He slipped his silly putty
back inside his front pocket.
"I can't wait" He yelled.
He knew he owned that game.
He danced through the house
down the walkway and across the yard.
Then Bowing to his partner
he stepped out into the joy
of Bobby's Last dance.

It has been December for a whole week already.. my tree is up.. colorful lights twinkling in the corner of my Living room and shining through the window to invite friends and family in for the Christmas season... I am not in the Holiday spirit.. I haven't a clue as to what to buy for gifts.. everyone has what they need and most of what they want.. If I buy a green shirt.. they will have wanted a blue hoodie.. I have been shopping twice and the second time we didn't even buy any gifts.. I don't like the crowds and the rush that goes along with Christmas shopping... I do try to get into the spirit but some how it seems to elude me more and more year after year.. I can only hope that between now and Christmas day I will catch the spirit from some of the children or Grand-children.. it's not that I don't want to have a Merry Christmas.. maybe a big box of chocolate covered cherries would help.. Thanks stopping by my blog today.. I welcome both comments and followers.. Have a wonderful day.

Sunday~ Photo's.. Mutterings.. and even a Poem..

"It's important for survival that children have their own experiences, the kind they learn from. The kind their parents arrange for are not as useful. Good parents are the hardiest to get rid of." ~ Garrison Keillor

"They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself."
~ Andy Warhol

"I want there to be no peasant in my kingdom so poor that he cannot have a chicken in his pot every Sunday." ~ Henry IV

Weekly Winners~

~ Three brother finches settled in for the night in a dipper gourd that I grew and recycled into a little house for the babies that hatched here in the spring..

~ I love to recycle... this old igloo cooler no longer able to hold water.. now holds rich potting soil and waits on my porch steps for this summers second round of planting.. Already this summer it has furnished us with a bounty of yellow squash.. I'm thinking maybe I'll fill it with zinnia seeds to finish off the summer and keep it filled with bright blooms until frost!

~ I love listening to the roosters crow every morning.. ~ I love photo's of the chickens.. This group shot shows a Rooster named Uncle and a few of his wives.. Yes they all have names..

Unconscious Mutterings~ #393

1- Coma ::~ isn't that like sleep.. no phones.. no dogs to walk.. will I dream? I'll pass.. but thanks for the offer of some time off..

2- Aristotle :: ~ "Happiness depends upon ourselves." ~Aristotle
I often quote him.. he was smarter than me..

3- Pink Eye::~ don't look at me with that eye.. go get some drops.. that's contagious you know..
I have never had it and do not want it..

4- Expensive ::~ everything I want is expensive.. even the cheap things I don't want are expensive..

5- Dancer ::~ when I was four or five I wanted to be a dancer.. Frank even put me a bar on the back of the smoke house and Mary was my Ballet teacher.. she found all the poses in the encyclopedia..

6- Lipstick ::~ Nope.. I'll pass on that too.. well maybe a little light pink.. or Blood red.. should it match my eye shadow or my nail polish?.. or my shoes?

7- Buffer ::~ I have a duck named buffer because he has spent his whole life protecting the smallest duck from the bully.. they were grown and laying eggs when I realized that he was courting her.. suitor isn't nearly as good a name as buffer..

8- Stilettos ::~ somehow these words all are beginning to sound like someone went to a show.. I can't wear those crazy shoes.. I'd break my neck...

9- Booming ::~ I know a few people with Booming voices.. I always wish I could turn them down a notch or two.. late at night cars pass by on the highway with their radios booming.. I would be so deaf from that gibberish noise..

10- Rap ::~ I have listened to rap.. no choice.. had teens.. they had it booming until I unplugged their stereo.. but thankfully they played the cleaned up a little bit version while they lived here.. afraid I'd burn it I reckon.. sometimes I want to rap someone on the head.. Miss Dunbar rapped my knuckles with her ruler.. when I talked in the first grade.. my poor knuckles were always red and she broke a few rulers.. finally she put me in the closet.. I hated it and rapped on the door loudly until she let me out..

Spiritual Sundays~

Half Baked Blessings

a phone that keeps ringing
rattling my poor ears..

my friend causing anger
after all of these years?

walking these dogs
to no known avail

just walking and sniffing
and two wagging tails..

children come visiting
and then leave a mess..

to what their purpose
anyone could guess..

my feet are swollen
I have a head ache

some days my blessings
come to me half Baked..

so now dear Father
I hand this mess to you..

and ask that you guide me
in all that I do..
amen and amen..

Phones ringing .. both of them.. a friend who I have known a million years wanting to be contrary today and her silliness striking me in just the wrong way at a bad moment.. Thankfully I held my temper... I guess there is a blessing in that.. I'd hate to have to train a new very bestest forever friend... Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

I Love to Learn New Things...

"Every man has a right to a Saturday night bath." ~ Lyndon B. Johnson

"And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything." ~ William Shakespeare

"You can never underestimate the stupidity of the general public.
~ Scott Adams

Earlier this week I had a new visitor to my Blog.. He left me a comment that said I had engaged him.. I was of course thrilled with that.. I was thinking that was a good thing?.. then he invited me to his blog and I do love going on blog visits so I hurried right on over to check him out... It was there that I learned a new thing.. a new to me thing at least.. he had American Sentence poems on his blog.. I had never.. ever seen one that I remember.. never heard of them.. never wrote one myself.. that was not going to do... I liked them.. I wanted to write one.. I wanted to know more about them.. I googled and read and googled some more.. I thought many of the ones I found to be very profound and meaningful.. Most people compare them to a haiku though I think they would be more like senryu.. because of their often satirical nature.. Finally I felt that I had googled enough.. I tried to write a few of my own.. I might not be good at it yet.. these may be terrible when judged by some that were found when I googled them.. But these are mine.. and my first ones at that.. I even looked and looked for something to illustrate them with.. I hope you enjoy my first try at something new.. Mine are not as grand as his.. so I do hope you will visit his blog.. Thanks for a bump in a new direction Sepiru Chris...

~ "Direction" ~ Life spins me in so many directions.. I need a compass to find myself! 7/31/2010

.. ( and yes smarty pants..you know who you are... I do know the difference in a compass and a GPS device.. but mine has a compass in it..!)

~ "Lunch" ~ My stomach in fowl condition.. I could only eat soup and quackers.. 7/30/2010

~ "at 4 am" ~ The roosters are crowing in chorus... spurring the morning sun to rise... 7/31/2010

~ " High and Dry at the Courthouse ".. ~ Judged to be no longer useful~ a fountain thirsts in the courtyard... 7/31/2010

I hope you have enjoyed my American sentence poems.. or maybe I should only claim a try at them.. I know they aren't the best but they are what my Daddy would call "quick work".. something new.. a honest try.. They are fun.. You might enjoy writing one of them yourself.. I love learning new things.. and though these may not be perfect.. I think they see me off to a good start.. Do you know of a poetry form that I haven't tried yet.. send it along in a comment and I will surely give it a shot.. Thanks for stopping by my blog! Have a wonderful day!

Standing Beneath a Gibbous Moon....

"But, truly, I have wept too much! The Dawns are heartbreaking. Every moon is atrocious and every sun bitter." ~ Arthur Rimbaud

"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."
~ Anton Chekhov

"Everything has a natural explanation. The moon is not a god, but a great rock, and the sun a hot rock." ~ Anaxagoras

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Just looking up at the sky would you know what kind of moon this was?.. I wouldn't.. Tonight I know that it is a waxing gibbous moon.. Thanks to my grandson.. Mason.. I have learned a lot about the moon this last week.. every night as he and I give the dogs a final walk around the place before bedtime.. he explains the phases of the moon to me.. he has pointed out stars and tried to explain how to tell the difference in satellites and planets to his old Grandma.. I fear that I haven't soaked it all up as he has.. I am always amazed at how smart young kids are.. I don't think I knew words like astrology and and astronomy.. and I know I didn't know about the phases of a moon when I was ten years old.. I also didn't know how much blood a bat drinks in a day and what is in a snakes rattle.. and believe me.. I never take any one's word for anything.. Mason stood behind me every night after our walk and laughed as I looked up whatever had he shared .. we googled it all.. I have enjoyed the late night walks with our new dogs but I have really enjoyed them since Mason has been visiting.. who would have thought that his mini vacation would educate me?.. Thanks Mason!!
Mason with Bonnie and Clyde pose under the gibbous moon.. Thanks to everyone who has stopped by my blog today.. I hope you enjoy a moonlight walk when you can.. Have a great night!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

this weeks Three Words are ~ Feign.. Virtue.. Imply
There are people who believe that the moon affects the way people act and the things that they do.. eavesdropping on the law enforcement by means of a scanner I often hear them ask each other if the moon is full.. It does appear that there is more crime during certain stages of the moon.... maybe it does affect people.. OR maybe it's just that you can see better by the light of a full moon.. after all if I was digging in the field with a light shining you might pay me more attention than you would if I was only using moonlight.... with the moon in mind I twisted this weeks words into this poem..
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Beneath the Gibbous Moon

virtue squandered
beneath the gibbous moon
the feign of innocence
a burden to bear

daring to imply guilt
the jealous called me out
bothersome adolescence
who will miss you

I rest upon my shovel
bothersome burden buried
angelic virtue restored
beneath the gibbous moon

In the strongest current.. in deepest water..

resting almost mid-river.. permanently open..this old draw bridge has become diving platform to many of the local youth.. Known as Burton's Ferry landing this spot was once home to a booming ferry operation.. as you drive along highway 301.. Miles of old roads peak through the tree tops in the woods to lead to this spot where the old UN-used road dead ends at the river.. and the open bridge slowly rusts away.. a silent reminder to what used to be.. The afternoon that I was there to make this photo I was amazed to find campers with their tents erected beneath the old bridges and a great number of people enjoying the river in the late afternoon sunshine.. even I once swam out to this old draw bridge to climb up and then leap carelessly into the river.... I guess things haven't changed as mush as we like to think.. watching the young folks jumping into the water just as I did long ago before I was an antique.. brought a smile to my face.. and a flicker of joy to my old heart.. then I remembered all the snakes and alligators I had seen swimming in this very same river.. and with a shiver I stopped myself from calling out a "Y'all be careful" to the kids who by now were giving me the crazy lady look.. Giving Dave the "drive on" nod I only glanced back twice at the fun loving frolickers..

Three Things I'll Share for Thursday!

"Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday." ~ John Wayne

"If you can't stand solitude, perhaps others find you boring as well."
~ Mark Twain

"If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month." ~ Theodore Roosevelt

######################################################

It is Thursday and that usually means I share three things with you.. I could share some of my unwelcome .. boring.. most likely mean and nasty.. thoughts right now or I could just let my poetry speak for itself tonight.. I could really do both.. I guess.. I do try and put a little of myself into my writing.. You can't help it really it just flows from you right into the pen and then before you know it.. there it is.. just what you hadn't meant to say.. in black and white.. on the other hand.. don't be fooled .. I think most of us usually say exactly what we mean.. I hope that tonight.. what ever burdens you bear.. that you will find rest.. Have a great night!

From the Ashes

warned you..
or at least I tried..

Won't say I told ya though..
wouldn't listen..

they don't know..
even if they knew.. they don't..

trust.. the first thing to go..
last thing to die.. trusted to the end.. you did

nothing wrong with trust.. did it myself once..
won't catch me out there again.. you trust yourself..

hush now.. freedom brings a stiff price..
you paid yours and gave some for good measure..

I say time served..
and served well from what I saw..

but you let gones stay gones.. lay down the fans..
Let the roaring flames lie still..

for down is not out.. and out is not over..
Life is hope..and hope holds on when all else has given in..

And be reminded... every phoenix that hopes to fly..
must first rise up from the ashes...

A Few Words for Wednesday!

"There is no lighter burden, nor more agreeable, than a pen."
~Petrarch

"For every path you choose, there is another you must abandon, usually forever."
~ Joan D. Vinge

"Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better." ~ Pat Riley

****************************

The three words of today are... precise.. gradual... abandon..

Three Word Wednesday gives us a three word combination each week to play around with.. I often write poems with the words and many times haiku.. This week the word abandon seemed to strike a chord deep within this person I know as me.. I don't know why..

I did a couple of things with the words today..
#1~ a three minute brainstorm... very little all alone but it might show up again somewhere...

~ "let me be precise on what you are asking of me".. her boldness aglow beneath the darkening sky light.. "you expect me to plan a day-trip.. complete with a catered picnic.. and then just abandon the entire riding party to your Tom Foolery.."
She caught the barest nod of the silver curls.. his wicked smile achingly potent... a gradual persuasion to even his strongest rivals...
With a stomp of her booted foot and a toss of her head.. she pulled out her day trip planner.

* * * * * * *

#2~ an etheree....
Bought

Please
let me
be precise...
I am the chief!
your every wish
now lies within my grasp.
There will be no gradual
lessening of your temptation.
But feel free to keep this thought in mind~
I would never abandon you cheaply!

#2~ Thursday Photo Challenge!

Each Thursday you are given a challenge.. you may then go out and make a new photo or you may use one that you already have.. This weeks challenge is water..

"WATER" (Ocean, Lake, Waterfall, Ice, Rain, Wet Things,...)

A water tower.. on the oceans edge.. in a thunderstorm should pretty much cover the water challenge!...

******************************************************

1. Have you ever performed the Heimlich Maneuver on someone or had it performed on you? ~ No but I have snatched a child's arm up over their head .. and yanked on it when they choked.. that was the old way... it worked too but now they say we can't do that.. they say it's abuse.. who would have thought.. don't choke around me.. I'll do the snatch and jerk on you!!

2. Do you have a red room in your home? (Either painted red or red curtains etc.) ~ I do not have a red room... I am not to fond of red.. my kids once painted most of their room and all of themselves red with fingernail polish though..

3. Have you ever felt like banging your head against the wall?~ besides right now?? yes!!

4. Reports came out this week that Michael Jackson was gay. Are you shocked, don't believe it, don't care or felt he was all along?~ I wouldn't be shocked at much that was said about any famous person.. I don't really care if he was or wasn't.. they are not really important to my life and much as I wish it was different.. I'm sure I wasn't important to his... maybe that's why I'm just finding out about the gay thing huh?.. besides he's dead why do we need to know this now?

5. What's the dumbest thing you have done after a breakup with a S/O?~ I did a lot of dumb things after my one and only divorce.. I don't think I ever had a significant other besides him.. I had a few others but they were purely insignificant! I did do a smart thing though and marry my wonderful honey man.. (that honey man thing is for spite to the kids..) I love ya Dave!

6. If Berleen and Bud are standing on the roof of a one story building and decide to throw water balloons at Kimber walking down below on the sidewalk, what color balloon hits her first?~ I'm almost sure the jar of tinkle.. that the old witch on the first floor tossed out the window.. falls faster! But if you demand a balloon color I'll say purple..

7. What are the wildest, craziest pajamas you own?~ I used to own some of those now I just crash in shorts or sometimes a gown.. I do have some old red cloth that I could wrap up in and pretend I'm in a red room or something..

8. Have you ever ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle? ~ I have not.. I have ridden behind Dave and was once even thrown through the air across his back and landed on my feet.. I know it sounds like a lie.. but it is in fact the whole truth.. The side car sounds fun though..
9. Do/did you go party on Cinco De Mayo, and if so what color was the bartender's shirt?~ I did not go.. but I could have drank some tequila.. I like tequila.. If I had gone I'm thinking the shirt would have been black..

10. Why does a hat have a bill?~ to shade your eyes.. to write crazy sayings on.. and so people could ask this question..

11. If you were a WWE professional wrestler, what would your stage name be?! ~ wrestling is faker than fake and I would never be one... but the name crazy lady works alright..or I could use my old Trailer park name.. Miss Meany!

12. How many keys do you have on your keyring?~ lets see.. car.. house.. mama's house.. special secret box.. hidden cages.. handcuffs.. hmmm.... a few..

13. What is the oldest picture you currently have in your home? What year was it taken and who/what is the photo of? I love pictures and I have a bunch of them.. the oldest one I have is of my parents before they had children.. I'm guessing at 60 years old.. maybe a little older..
Thats my three things to share with you this Thursday.. Thanks for dropping by my blog..
I hope you have enjoyed your visit and maybe smiled or had a laugh... Please feel free to leave me comments.. Have a wonderful night..

Enticed by a Gaze...

"I'm writing a book. I've got the page numbers done." ~Steven Wright

"The world is before you and you need not take it or leave it as it was when you came in." ~James A. Baldwin

##########################################

Weekend Wordsmith is a blogspot for would-be writers to pick up the Prompt of the Week as a challenge to write-write-write! This weeks word is Gaze.. I was reminded of the apparent secret language that my parents shared by exchanging just a look.. I often thought that they must have shared one mind and always thought alike.. sometimes Mama would look at Daddy and he would smile and be off to the store.. returning a few minutes later with a Tab and a sweet cake for everyone.. or maybe a pack of crackers... I tried to follow their gazes.. I never saw either of them look at a drink bottle or an empty Cinnamon roll package.. I wonder if he ever brought back a bag of chips when she sent for candy bars?

Many things can be read in a simple gaze.. I am told that I often give people the evil eye.. I have recently seen that wicked look in some photo's of me.. I was frightened of my gaze and will try not to aim it at anyone I like ever again
. Why am I looking so mean? Even I don't know who I was looking at..
and Now on to my poetic offering for the word Gaze....

Happy Birthday my Sweet Emily!!

"If we were not all so interested in ourselves, life would be so uninteresting that none of us would be able to endure it." ~ Arthur Schopenhauer

"Because time itself is like a spiral, something special happens on your birthday each year: The same energy that God invested in you at birth is present once again."
~Menachem Mendel Schneerson

"Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself."
~Tom Wilson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Twenty years ago..in a few more hours.. I rolled over in the hospital bed and coughed.. with just that cough Emily burst into the world.. the next few minutes were a blur.. she had managed to tangle her neck and one arm up in her cord.. she had decided to come into the world in a big way..I was surrounded by Doctors and Nurses and I think she and I were turned inside..outside and upside down before they were satisfied and she was safely delivered.. I heard a nurse call
6-11.. I hadn't a clue what that was.. I later found out it was her supposed weight.. I say supposed because when they weighed her in the nursery they said she only weighed 3 pounds and 11 ounces. They whisked her away to the incubator where she lay under the blue lights and sucked up their oxygen with her thumb tucked tightly into her tiny pursed lips..
Emily 6 weeks old... though you really can't tell from this picture she is still very tiny.. I stole her dress from a doll.. her hairband is actually a regular baby hair band cut in half.. If you look close at the bow on her head it appears to be giant for a baby hair bow.. She was a happy happy baby... sweet as sugar!!
Emily... 3 years old! She.. with Cooper's help... cut her own hair for the photo shoot.. can you tell? I was so mad with them both and she smiled and said.. But I will make a pretty picture.. I had a green Velvet dress picked out for her to wear too but she wasn't having that.. finally I decided that since the haircut was going to ruin the Pictures anyway I would just let them wear what they wanted.. she was right she made a great picture.. this is one of my favorite photo's of Emily..
Emily.. 5 years old.. one of the very few pictures of her by herself... she was proving she could stay clean for three hours.. what you don't see here is that as soon as we slid her ruffled dress back on she grabbed a cup of cool-aid and spilled it all over Cooper and Anthony./. but she did stay clean!
This is a recent picture of Emily along with her beloved.. Luke.. Happy Birthday Emily! I love You!
Emily brought a new chapter to my life.. one where we sat in hospitals and cancer clinics and drove for hours everyday for years and years... but one where I was in awe of her ability to smile even when she was in great pain.. The doctors would do a painful procedure to her and when they were done she would hug them tight.. She once told one of our very favorite doctor's.. Dr Red.. because he had red hair.. that she was "forgiving" him with a hug.. he and I both cried.. she was a good child if you over looked the hair cuts.. the painting of the walls .. the floors.. herself.. she always had a willing and ready partner for her mischief.. Cooper would do anything she said and then say it was all his idea... I am sure he had some idea's of his own and in those she was a willing accomplice....she loves to talk and has to have the last word.. were she here right now she would prove it by saying.." No I don't have to have the last word Mama..!"
smart.. and beautiful.. funny I always thought she was more like her Father but that last part sounds more like me!! Happy Birthday Emily Suzanne!! I love you!
I hope you enjoy my poem....Have a wonderful night!
My Baby Girl!
Barrettes and ribbons
Baby dolls and lace.
Ah my baby girl
Such a sweet face.
Tea parties and Teddy bears
Tree climbing, Let's race.
She might be the smallest
But she demands her own space.
Schoolwork and Boyfriends
A Friday night date.
Hey mama don't worry
I just might be out late.
Ruffles on prom gowns
A mind of her own.
I'm not sure I like this
My baby girl is grown!
Three for Thursday!
"A man's true wealth is the good he does in the world. Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror. But you are eternity and you are the mirror."
~Kahlil Gibran
"What a holler would ensue if people had to pay the minister as much to marry them as they have to pay a lawyer to get them a divorce." ~ Claire Trevor
"Imagination is like a lofty building reared to meet the sky; fancy is a balloon that soars at the wind's will." ~ Frank Gelett Burgess
1:)~ Just rambling! ~~ Today has been a pretty ordinary day.. I slept till almost 1:30pm...That part wasn't ordinary.. I'm usually up early.. I did wake up for a few minutes and looking at Dave there sleeping soundly.. I decided to just stay there and sleep along with him.. His work schedule means that I write and sleep while he works and he sleeps while I cook.. clean.. and compute.. we did all the normal daily things we do.. Most of our daily joint work revolves around out animals.. feeding takes a while longer when everyone has water frozen in their drinking containers.. the pig squealed and squealed this morning.. I had already went back for an apple and then for some bread with peanut butter and scratched her butt before I realized her water was frozen... as soon as we fixed that she went about munching on her red apple.. we had a few eggs this morning that were cracked open.. frozen.. but we also had a few that were not frozen and the chickens were fine.. when I checked on them all just before dark they were all roosting quietly.. they will be up and crowing at around 4am.. I guess they go to sleep early to get an early start... The weather channels are calling for snow tonight.. we never get snow.. well actually there have been a few snows here in my lifetime.. someone asked me if I had been to the store.. I just laughed at them.. in the southeast if there is even a rumor of snow the grocery store fills up and all the milk and bread vanishes... and people know we never get snow.. and even if a few flakes were to fall during the night it will melt just as soon as the sun rises.. oh well.. I don't have bread but I have a bread machine.. I have a well stocked pantry and a freezer as well.. I personally would like to see a little snow... I did check to be sure that my camp stove and the fuel were in the laundry room.... just in case... after all it never hurts to be prepared! If it does indeed snow... maybe I'll have a snowman party like I did when Cooper and Emily were small... It was just me and the two of them who lived here then and they were itching to get outside and catch a cold.. the snow was about an inch deep.. just a dusting at best.. I really think it took all we could roll up to make the three balls we needed.. he was a sad snowman for sure but they loved him... They both had a fit the next morning when all that was left of him was Anthony's old hat.. Emily's scarf.. some wet charcoal .. and a wilted carrot.. Maybe instead of a snowman party I'll just stay inside where it is warm.... after all it will be just another ordinary day! Have a wonderful night.. stay safe and warm where ever you are..
3:) ~ a Haiku~
Poems.... I wrote this first poem for a contest and was delighted to discover that is a featured Poem on PoetrySoup this week.. folks always want to know what I get paid to be featured.. I get paid nothing.. but I still love to be a featured poet.. in fact I have been featured two week in a row.. the second poem was featured last week and has just passed into the final round in the contest it was entered into.. the contests began with almost a thousand entries.. the final round has narrowed the field to 263... I know I am still a needle in a haystack but at least I made it this far! YAY ME!!! Winning this prize would mean a small sum of money.. maybe enough to buy me some new pens and notebooks! I think you may have read these two poems before but maybe you will enjoy them a second time around..
He is omega the last of his kind
In a place of standing stones.
It's Hard to pass a Word Prompt!
"My advice is to consult the lives of other men, as we would a looking glass, and from thence fetch examples of our own imitation."
~ Terence
"One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and if it were possible, speak a few reasonable words."
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
This week SIMPLY SNICKERS poetry prompt asks that we write a short poem that includes these key words: know, now, need
Also This week .. Simply Snickers celebrates the birthday of British painter Edward Wadsworth, who was born on October 29, 1889.
To honor this artist, they offer samples of this artist’s work to accompany this week’s prompt.
Looking at this image I get an idea of a broken mirror reflecting sad images of shattered dreams..
Shattered Dreams
knowing not your needs
my own wants.. demanded
I now stand alone
a broken soul.. with
reflections of dreams denied
scattered at my feet.
and some thoughts on this wild and crazy.. busy..week~
this week I have been very busy trying to teach an old dog.. me.. a new trick... I wanted to be able to make slide-show DVD's for family and friends.. as a way to enjoy old photographs and to share them in a format that would be easy for the youngest and the oldest to enjoy.. I had seen a few before.. I really liked them..photographs flashing on the television screen.. set to music that seemed to match the mood of the Photo's or the person featured in the show.. My son's Father-in-Law~ Bob~ had the first set and still my favorite set.. I ever saw...he had photo's of ancestors for many.. many.. years back... and up to current day.. they looked simple enough to do.. I figured that I wouldn't pay to have mine done.. everybody knows I'm cheap.. I would do my own.. Let me tell you that my first attempt was a flop.. so being me and stubborn as I am often told that I am.. I would not give up... I had no idea just how time consuming these things are to make.. there are a bazillion( at least that many!!) programs out there that say they write Dvd's "simply and quickly"... my box says that too.. The box doesn't tell you that every photo has to be in a certain format... I figured that out soon enough since it said I had NO photo's on my computer.. so I had to change the ones I had or scan new ones to that format.. I did a little of each... and I tried again and again.. and yesterday I tried yet again.. I made an pretty good video.. it played perfectly well in my computer.. but it was a no go in the DVD player.. So I tried a different Program.. and I made one that would play in both the computer and in the DVD player.. but some of us had no heads and some of us had no legs.. one of us was just a rib cage.. I was almost ready to give up and pay someone else to do this crazy work.. then I spotted a button on the screen that I hadn't clicked yet.. I clicked it and it said to me.. " no photo has been selected to re-size... please make a selection and try again.." I re-sized and re-sized and then I re-ordered and transitioned.. I set effects and listened to music samples.. music samples are awful for this kind of thing.. unless you want elevator bong bong rap on your Video... I didn't ...so I searched for a CD that I liked.... I uploaded and previewed and re-sized twice more.. and at 5am this morning I watched my very first installment of Patsy's World DVDs on my Television.. WOW! who knew these things were so EASY to make!! I know what y'all are getting for Christmas!!
Have a great night..
Thursday and I Have Three Things to Share with You!!
"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul." ~John Muir
"Our hearts are drunk with a beauty our eyes could never see." ~George W. Russell
Today is Thursday.. I always share three things with you on Thursday.. I do enjoy sharing things with you.. and so let me begin.....
1-]... The Thursday Challenge for today is ~~ "BEAUTY" (Sunset, Nature, People, Houses, Eyes...)
My Granddaughter Maya.. She lives in the beautiful State Of New Mexico.. where she plays the violin and rides in rodeos.. (just to list a couple of her many talents...) She's a beauty!! The sky behind her is a beauty too..
2-]... a haiku..
3-]..... A Poem from Three Words
these are from a previous 3 word Wednesday challenge
The words are- hanky; thick and drift
The Painted Lady
She pats her combed and curled up hair
painted lips twist into a sad smile.
Tucking her mama's hanky
between her powdered bosoms.
She thinks of Home
Lonely Cowpokes drift in from the badlands
gunslingers crowd around the bar.
Card sharks bluff and bluster at every table
playing till their money is gone
The hot night air thick with whiskey:
cigar smoke and danger
She gasps.. an excited shiver
trickling down her spine.
Stepping out onto the landing
she gathers her courage
she hurries to her admirer's side.
For a little hanky panky the drifter has traveled far
She will drink and dance the night away.
A sweetheart for his dime
The morning after.. Daylight
will shine on just a painted lady
sleeping sweetly;
dressed only in her angelic smile..
Just for starters... Weekend Wordsmith!
"A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It's my favorite part of the business, live concerts. " ~ Elvis Presley
"A lot of words in English confuse the idea of life and electricity, like the word livewire."
~ Laurie Anderson
"What is a soul? It's like electricity - we don't really know what it is, but it's a force that can light a room. " ~ Ray Charles
Writers are different than most people.. even in our own group there is no NORM.. I do strange things like write words on scraps of paper.. Maybe I saw the word somewhere or maybe it was sent to me as a prompt.. maybe someone used it in scrabble and I didn't know what it meant..
But regardless of how they come to me.. they wind up scribbled on index cards and scraps of paper.. they fill bowls and baskets on my crowded desk and eventually they become a poem.. I will take a handful of them and write them again into a list.. thinking about each word as I re-write it and shred it's original scrap of paper.. today as I was writing down the word for this weekend from Weekend Wordsmith.... ~ELECTRICITY~ .. I decided to pull a handful of words from the pile and see what I could twist and turn them into..
theses are the words.. or phrases.. that my hand chose.. Foofaraw.. Limit..spirit of the drums..weeping willow..gnarled..Island.. rhythms.. ocean.. fallow... the old city ..incredible..key..silent..abandon..ugly..empty.. pink.. black sea.. embrace.. destiny.. secret.. scream.. fragile..silence..a newly uncorked wine.. plastic flamingos?...
I had to look up one word.. can you guess which one?.. it means noisily or fuss.. I guess I had some questions about the whole flamingo idea.. But I did put together a poem .. I have heard people say that the spirit of the islands will seep into your blood and and cause you to want to leave all reality behind.. I managed to use most of the words.. I guess I still have questions about the plastic flamingos.. ( I recognize this as a prompt from an earlier Weekend Wordsmith!) I used not the word flamingo but instead.. a description of them.. This might be a long night.. I have a lot of things I want to post.. so.. just for starters.. Have a wonderful Friday night!
Patsy
Island Rhythms
an empty black sea
stretches endlessly before me
the throbbing spirit of the drums
a fiery jolt of electricity
that dances through my soul
the old city ugly and abandoned
it's screams silent
all ambition gone
fragile destiny embraced
nimble crimson legs race
along the waters edge
delicate pink wings outstretched
grace and beauty combine
with a foofaraw of honking and babbling
slipping through the guard
of gnarled weeping willows
I slip the rusty key into my pocket
before joining my comrades
for a glass of newly uncorked wine
the emerald garden on my mind
tonight will be our farewell
I intend not to return to my fallow life
they will seek me but for a while
slipping away in the night I will be no more
treasure without limit lies beneath the nests
delicate creatures once
chiseled into stone
T
he embodiment of the god Ra
I welcome the winds of change
the loud thumping of my heart
keeping perfect time
with the ancient island rhythms
Even I am Artistic!
"Old age ain't no place for sissies." ~ Bette Davis
"We relish news of our heroes, forgetting that we are extraordinary to somebody too."
~Helen Hayes
"A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a love sickness."
~Robert Frost
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi and Welcome to Thursday! The weather has begun to cool off here and that is always a blessing to us.. No air conditioner.. no heat.. Lower electric bill.. I love that.. and in these penny pinching times.. anything that helps lower a bill is a huge blessing by my standards..

Today is Thursday and that means I share three things with you who will visit here.. I hope you enjoy your visit and hopefully will come back again...

1~}- The Thursday photo challenge this week has listed the theme "ART" and goes further to explain it as follows... ~ Paintings, Drawings, Murals, Graffiti, Crafts, Brushes, Pens, Pencils,...~

I could have walked around snapping pictures of the drawing on my kid's room walls.. the bucket of paint Dave left sitting in the floor of the room we are working on.. the hand painted birdhouses that the children and I made years ago for our feathered friends.. the sketch books Coop left in his old room.. the pencil drawing Anthony made for me of the Gunslinger... The Apple Emily colored for me in first grade.. The velvet "Love" poster Jenny made for me.. or even some of Davids art work.. But I didn't.. I am still using someone else laptop and I am trying my very best to be a good borrower and not add anything... unless I positively have to... to her computer.. So I searched the very few pictures I had added and all the pictures of hers and way back in the distance behind her and her beloved.. I spotted some very beautiful art.. The trees in this shot are very appealing and artistic to me.. The statue isn't half bad either.. I love all things art and I think that Art covers an extremely large area.. My Mom's quilts are art.. Photographs family and friends make are art.. The food Reuben cooks is an art...The birdhouses we make from gourds are art.. Tattoos that my friend Red puts on people are art..Even the way I twist and turn words is an art.. I think almost everyone has some artistic talent... Maybe you can draw good sidewalk chalk pictures or build a great sand castle?! ..But My very favorite form of art.. is the beauty found naturally in our everyday world!..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2~}- I recently entered a contest that I think I talked about where I didn't notice that it was "rounds"... My first round poem was called Spilled Colors and then I got the note saying I had to report to the sight and choose a name from a list and write a poem about a name on the list... As soon as I scanned the list I spotted a name that I have heard many times before... Uncle Weston has been a ghost story around these parts for many years.. A black Man ghost who plows a mule by lantern light is a ghost story that you never forget.. especially when you have stayed many nights in the house with your sister who lives on that land where he is said to walk... The contest is over and I didn't win.. I don't care about the winning really.. I usually write by what moves me .. once I saw this name I knew that I had to write Weston's story.. But I have had a gazillion comments on the poem.. I hope you like it.. If you ever come to this neck of the woods I'll be glad to show you where Uncle Weston plows.. I'll almost bet we could even get my oldest sister to put on a pot of coffee..
The Widow's Mite ~ (Weston)
Weston worked and worried
from sun up till sundown
for the freed-man knew the reason
that Pap had gone to town.
Pap had loved his family
but now that Ma was gone
Pap had said to Weston
"I can't do this alone."
Pap had hitched the wagon
and said "I've got to ride"
" But I'll be back this evening
with Leatha by my side.."
The young uns worried Weston
as they picked and teased all day
No matter how they nagged him
not a word did Weston say..
Pappy loved his Leatha
She worked right by his side
she proved herself a help-mate
not just an Old Man's bride.
Weston held each baby
As if they were his own
and all too soon for Leatha
God called Pappy home
The Young uns said to Leatha
we will give you land
some lumber for a two room shack
a mule and Pappy's Hand.
the Child bride was a widow
she had no will to fight
Weston was a freed-man
who became the widow's mite.
Weston spoke to Leatha
as the sun rose on the day
"Get yo babies Mammy
and lets be on our way"
Side by side they worked the land
a forty acre sprawl
they watched the sons grow in to men
straight and strong and Tall.
They called him Uncle Weston
their Pap had set him free
But he stayed to help their mammy
and hold them on his knee.
Crony; Benson; Dorris
and baby Elloree
all loved their uncle Weston
and now we come to me..
Weston died one Sunday
I now live on the land
where Mammy came with babies
and one old wrinkled hand.
They say Old Weston walks here
Him and his Mule Belle
They plow and plant the acres
and see that we are well..
I never saw a spirit
but sometimes late at night
I here the mules bell jingle
I see a lanterns Light..
Uncle Weston was a freed man
His skin as black as Night
But Mammy was a widow
and he was Mammy's Might!
a special thanks to Crony's daughter Nancy
and to her daughter-in-law Trudy for sharing
their stories of Mammy and Uncle Weston
3~}- A Haiku to finish out the three..
Dave and I planted a few rows of peas .. we planted them late in the year but were hoping to get a few pots of fresh ones before the frost finished them off.. We picked a dishpan full this week. Mama sure is a lot faster pea sheller than I am.. she had them shelled by the time I got our lunch fixed.. Three quarts of peas for the freezer and a rare weekday lunch with me.. Mama and Dave.. I love fresh peas and corn bread...
That is three for Thursday.. another week has almost come and gone.. I noticed yesterday that the stores have Halloween and Christmas decoration all crammed in there together..I did finally find a pilgrim stuffed on the bottom shelf way down on the end of the aisle.. I was thinking about decorating with a skeleton in a Santa suit with a lady pilgrim.. baking a pumpkin pie.. for his wife.. That way I can just decorate once time and leave it up till just before New Years! wouldn't that be artistic?? ... Maybe I'll pass on the decorations all around and just quietly be thankful for the artistic beauty I see around me everyday... Have a great day!!
