A Refreshing Run!

"Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?'" ~Peter Maher ~ Canadian marathon runner~

"Tough times don't last but tough people do." ~A.C. Green~

In Monday's post about the importance of recreation. I was debating with myself the fact that I was kinda maybe wondering if My older Brother Jim was trying to be helpful when we were young by making Reuben and I run from him as he attempted to lasso us. He really was quiet good with his rope and we often had rope burns on some part of our body where he would rope us as we ran away. He would chase behind yelling "Yah Bull Yah!" Reuben seemed to be Jimmy's favorite bull. And so with that refreshing recreation in mind I offer for your amusement this little Poem. Have a great Wednesday! I thank all my brothers for making my life "special"! Have a great day. Try to find something special in life every day!
Patsy.

A Refreshing Run!

"Run run as fast as you can."
"Everybody knows you can't outrun Jimmy!"
"Under the house! Quick! he won't follow you under there!"
~BAM! "Reuben ~ duck! You can't just run up under the house!"
"Eventually he will give up and go away. Then you come out!"
"Now Reuben! Come out Now.. But run for the house!"

"Curve and weave and he'll miss But don't you stop."

"Bet ya money he could lasso a bull."
"Lot's of practice make a bad boy good at what he does."
"Actually he ain't all bad. He gave me some of his candy once."
"Candy he dropped in the dirt I betcha! Or worse."
"Keep your eyes open. He ain't gone far! Run! Run! here he comes again!"

"Just let me lasso you one more time and I'll quit!"
"Ah shucks! I didn't hurt ya! why ya wanna cry for?"
"Mama better not hear about this!"
"Ever think you might grow up to be a Bull? You need practice!
"Someday when yall grown and learn about recreation ya gonna thank me!"

"Everybody knows recreation is good for ya! Even a dummy knows that.

"Babies cry and girls. Patsy's crying cause she's an old ugly girl."
"Let her cry by herself.. Hush that up! Ya better RUN!
"Alright, I won't rope yall no more today. Just one last time!"
"Come on, eat this candy; It taste like dirt; But ya will like it."
"Keep yall refreshed is all I'm trying to do.. It's just recreation.. It's good for yall.

National Recreation Month

"Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.” ~ Thomas Jefferson ~

"If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play at it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf." ~Bob Hope~

"The bow cannot always stand bent, nor can human frailty subsist without some lawful recreation". ~Miguel de Cervantes ~

July is Know as National Recreation Month. The Dictionary says that recreation is the expenditure of time in a manner designed for therapeutic refreshment of one's body or mind. It goes on to add that while leisure is more likely a form of entertainment or rest, recreation is active for the participant but in a refreshing and diverting manner. Wow that could cover a lot of stuff. I mean I have been doing a whole lot of recreation without ever knowing it.

Cycling, Dancing, Eating and drinking, Partying, Hunting and fishing, All are listed as recreation. Hobbies, Computer games, Reading a book, Shopping, Kite flying, Listening to music, Sports and exercise also all have a place on the list. Travel and tourism, Martial arts, Yoga, Using the Internet, Visiting an amusement park, Singing, Video games, and Watching movies are all also known as recreations. I am guilty of quiet a few of them. I have a few Hobbies like crocheting doll clothes and knitting hats or dish rags.. Recreation!! I love to read and normally read at least one book a week. Recreation again! I sing in the shower so I'm killing two birds with one stone there.. recreation and just plain bathing. That's gotta be multi- Tasking; right? Man I am getting good! And to think that years ago when I was a party goer I was doing something considered good for you..(well yea I know better but I thought...) I guess the Internet and the video Games would be the two recreations I do the most of. And so from now on when someone says to me that I stay on-line too much I will just smile and say that recreation is good for you!

I would like to add some recreations from Our childhood to my list. Hill sliding on the railroad hills. That was refreshing to both the body and the mind. Especially if you didn't hit a tree. I still love it today even though I'm grown. And I haven't hit a tree in years and years. Tunnel digging was always fun too. We would dig out rooms under the ground and furnish them with block chairs and lots of food from Mama's pantry. The jello we ate from the box there was surely refreshing to our sweet tooth.

Tree climbing and tree house building were always great fun too. We had lots of those. We had lots of woods for our recreation time. I guess you could say that we, as kids, had lots of recreation time. Daddy swore Hoeing the garden was fun and it was refreshing to finish.. I'm even going to stretch way, way out there and say that the times Jim looked at Me or Reuben and said "RUN" he was just helping us have some recreation. In Fact it was recreation for all of us as he tried his best to get the lasso around our necks and we tried our very best for him not to. Man all those years I thought he wanted to choke us and come to find out it was something else all together.. Recreation!!! I wonder if he knew that? I bet he will say he did! I guess we owe Jim a thanks!

In recent years, more 'exciting' forms of recreation have received more attention in the public eye, such as: skiing, snowboarding, bungee jumping, sky diving, hang gliding, paintball, rock climbing, backpacking, canyoning, caving, base jumping, and motor sport. These would be called extreme sports. Or if I was naming them I would say extremely foolish sports. But then again they are Recreation! The only one of these I can claim would be the rock climbing and that was only to climb up the side of a water fall in New Mexico. It would hardly classify as rock climbing but to me and Mason it was scary. My sons snow-board. My oldest son's family all snow-board. I have a board here in my house.. I don't like the way it looks. I'd much rather come down the mountain on a cardboard box.. Flat on my butt.. Most of the others I would be petrified to even try. But I guess that the best part about recreation is that we all get to choose to do what we like.. what we enjoy.

Recreation- any activity that diverts, amuses or stimulates. That definition leaves room for a lot of things doesn't it. Now that I think of it I may tear that definition out of my dictionary.. Otherwise, all the things my kids got in trouble for will now be known as recreation. Choose your recreation wisely. But do choose to do something fun every day. All work and no play really does make a dull life. Try to have fun a little bit every day. Laugh as much as you can and if you are ever in my neck of the woods I'll take you rail road hill sliding. My all time favorite recreation! Have a great day!

Wednesday's Poem of the Day!

"Heroes are people who rise to the occasion and slip quietly away."
~Tom Brokaw~

"Heroism feels and never reasons, and therefore is always right."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~

"Without heroes we're all plain people and don't know how far we can go."
~Bernard Malamud~

Hero's Heartstrings
Tears of joy

come falling down
when they make
the baseball team
the first home run.
the final out.
The honor roll.
The Senior Choir.
The young artist association.
The Jump team.
Or any other minor
or major accomplishment.

Pride fills us
We are their hero
and they are ours.
So short lived is our glory.

For the hero's
become the coaches
the team mates
the teachers
the friends
the neighbors
the lovers
and sometimes Uncle Sam.

But to have held
a hero's place
for only a moment
when no one could
be greater in their eyes
than we so very briefly are
makes all the other tears
worth the pain they leave
as they too must fall.
For every heart that has been broken
can be mended with love.
And a true hero
has a heart that has been quilted
with a Rainbows
many color's of heartstrings!

My children have always been my heroes. I am so proud of each of them. They have stepped out into adventures I would have been afraid to undertake. They have each taken risks I would have never been brave enough to face. I Have seen each of them struggle and in the end everything ended just right.

Each of my Eight siblings holds a hero's place in my heart just by being the truly wonderful people they have been for all our years together. I love each of them so dearly and also so very differently as they are a truly unique crowd of people.

My Husband, Dave, will always be my ultimate hero. He has Fathered and
be-friended not only the five of his and mine; But all the other kids and strays, (both dogs and people) That either I or one of the children have dragged into his life and his house. Almost, always with-out complaint.

I aspire to be worthy to be; even for a moment; Their hero in return! Allow someone to be your hero. Allow yourself to become someones hero as well!
Have a great day!

Cleaning Out the House!

Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing. ~Phyllis Diller~

Housework can't kill you, but why take a chance? ~Phyllis Diller~

I like to think I keep a pretty clean house. I have real issues with having dirty dishes or dirty floors around me so those I might even over clean. But for a few weeks now I haven't been cleaning UP the house. I have been cleaning OUT the house. Believe me there is a huge difference. And in My case I haven't cleaned out the house since I moved here so It was way passed time.

In a little less than a Month I will have been living here for sixteen years. I moved here a single Mom with three kids and a spare. George was My oldest son's best friend and needed a place to live and he chose us. We allowed him to stay. Dave joined us two years after that along with David and Jennifer. We all enjoyed life here and almost never ruined anything. The kids took great care of their toys and we found out that you can pack a lot of stuff into small closets. Dresser drawers hold almost more stuff than you can imagine too. Boxes built from scrap lumber can be stacked to hold even more great old stuff. Un-used suitcases under the bed.. Wow.. Lets fill those with every one's baby clothes and even Anthony's first Cowboy boots. Emily's first patent leather shoes have a shelf of their own. Cooper's sheriffs uniform made from "Aunt Ruby's" real one couldn't be gotten rid of. He might want that for his own son one day.

David and Jennifer's first report cards after we married and All the school papers they brought home that year fill a desk drawer. Reports they worked so hard on and booklets they made for school fill another. Tiny teeth paid for with quarters and dimes fill a prince Albert tobacco can. They were hidden behind those tiny shoes of Emily's. Cigars from I guess every birth in the family have a cigar box all of their own to stay hidden inside. Some say Girl, Some say Boy! The box was Daddy's I have to keep that. I bet you are beginning to understand why I needed to clean OUT the house.

Cleaning OUT means carefully opening boxes and drawers that haven't been disturbed in a while. It means digging through old papers and photo's and baskets and files. It means looking over old car titles.. A couple who's matching car has long since been junked... and divorce papers... Both his and mine and we could maybe need those one day so back they go.. together this time though in one file marked old documents. I did whittle those files all down to one. So much room in that drawer now I was able to move some other things into it.. It's hard really to let some things be shredded when you have held on to them so long.. But those things will make great mulch and after all. I'm Cleaning OUT the house!

Beginning in My own room and Bathroom I cleaned cabinets and dressers and closets and shelves. I looked at everything in old jewelry boxes and tin cans and baskets. I emptied the suitcases from under the beds. Any clothes that I hadn't worn in the last 6 months went to the "outta here" pile. I tried to get rid of about half of what was on every shelf. About a third of the way through I got to thinking that somebody somewhere might could use some of my old junk.. I sent for boxes.. I was now cleaning out the house and planning for a yard sale... Now I had three things going on.. Cleaning out the house.. bagging all the pure trash and washing and dusting anything that might be worth a quarter. I had linens and blankets we never use any more. I had ear rings and bracelets and candles too. I swept the dirt from every crack and crevice and dusted with lemon scented polish. I spent well over a week in mine and Dave's two personal rooms.

Moving on to the Kitchen and dining rooms I have finally declared myself to be half done. It has not been an easy task. I have way to much stuff. I have way to many collections. Tea sets and shot glasses and dolls. Lots and lots and lots of dolls. Bottles and antique Coffee pots and books. Many, many Books! But I have surprised myself. I have thought over a few things; debating with myself; but in the end I really have got rid of a lot of things that were just taking up space here.

I have boxes and Boxes of stuff to sell and bags and bags of trash. I have lots more room on the shelves and even an empty drawer or two in a dresser here and there. I still have baby clothes and cigars and a couple of pairs of tiny shoes. They get to stay this time.. They have their own space for now. Trophy's and drawings have a new space as well. All those "pre-us" photo's have been divided and one day will be dispersed between the five children. Each of them have stuff here that I don't have the heart to throw away. I really hope that one day I can pass some of this clutter on to them. And hopefully I will then smile and think of all the years I held it in trust for them only to see it tossed away the very first time they Clean Out their House!!

Material things can be important because of who they belonged to or what they represent but in the end they are just things. My loving memories of our lives here will always be with me even if I threw away everything. I will enjoy the new look of a little less stuff. And if I know me..... I'll find some new stuff to save. Mason's school work already hangs on my fridge and he has toys and games here too. I love to make doll clothes for Maya so that requires thread and crochet hooks and new dolls that match the ones she has.. I think I saved a drawer each for their stuff.

I have three rooms to go. I have declared this to be a no cleaning week. I am looking the remaining rooms over each day. I am deciding what I can live with out. I am imagining being done. I am seeing things in a new light. I can imagine them sitting on the table outside with a quarter price tag and not shudder. I am on a roll now.. I AM Cleaning OUT the house!

Live simply when you can. Remember that things are never More important than the memories they represent .. Have a great Day!

Tag I'm It! A different kind of Chase!

“If you feel the urge, don't be afraid to go on a wild goose chase. What do you think wild geese are for anyway?” ~ Will Rogers~

Wow!! I didn't know that we could play Tag on our blogs. I used to love to play tag with My Family. We would make up all kinds of chasing and Tagging games. Running around ans squatting down yelling Pepsi Cola... Dr. Pepper!

Oh wait that would be a fact and I should be saving those for the game.. I guess y'all got that one free. ~ I have been Memed ~7 things!~ is the game of tag that I have been tagged for; by Theresa Komor over at her blog . http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/

I am supposed to now follow these rules and share with everyone some facts about myself. I can do this.. And here we go!

Here's the rules:

1. List these rules on your blog.

2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog.

3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.

4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Now for my Seven amazing or maybe just plain facts about me.

Fact #1~ My Middle Name is Roberta. Or Maybe it's not the middle name any more. But it's for sure in there some where. I scared a teacher last year by telling her my "whole" Name. Well that and she said she had never met a divorced person before. And No I won't tell you country we got her from.. She is a good teacher.. Just a little easily frightened by country Girls like me!

Fact #2~ I have a slew of siblings. 3 sisters~ Trudy; Mary; and Martha ~
and 4 Brothers~ David; Franklin; Jim; and Reuben~ I could tell you a secret fact about each of them too But I want to live a few more years... If you read my blog often you'll learn all their secrets eventually anyway!

Fact #3~ I can move very fast when Mad. (and Pregnant!) Just ask my nieces and nephews... .. they will also tell you that I do believe in a spanking sometimes... (a Lot!) .. rarely then?!.... . On the other hand they all Love me even if I was known in the Trailer park as "Miss Meany!" And you would be mean too if you lived in that Trailer park. Mean was the way to survive!

Fact #4~ I once watched my Cousin get his Butt whipped with a smile as he was blamed for setting free the Opossum Daddy had caged in a plan to cook for Thanksgiving... I was NOT eating My friend Butch... and The Cousin needed a whipping anyway because he was mean to his mama. I did confess to My Daddy right before he died and he and I shared a laugh over it.. Turns out he knew all along I turned the Possum loose. He said he would Never have cooked it anyway. I guess I should be ashamed that I smiled while my cousin got my whipping.. But ~ well~ I am still NOT ashamed..

Fact #5~ When I was in High School I used to do homework for others and sell it to them.. I'd meet them in the library and sell them homework. Can I help it I was smart? And they were lazy? OK.. I am a little sorry for doing that But hey they all turned out OK anyway.. They all have good jobs... I reckon they do at least. Or they married well one or the other.. Isn't it a fact that all is well that ends well? At the very least that's MY story and I'm sticking to it.

Fact #6~ Me and My cousin used to go everywhere our parents told us not to. They said stay away from the railroad tracks because hobo's would get us. We set up a camp sight and left notes for the hobo's just in case. We were hurrying home through the woods to her house once when she fell off the bike's handle bars and rolled onto the tracks as a train was coming from a ways off.. . I cried all the way to her house and all the time I was climbing the tree and all the while I was telling her Daddy that she was in the bathroom. I didn't quit till she finally made it home; Limping; all bruised and Briar- scratched an hour later. Sorry Sheron! I should have waited to see if the train Hit you. You were and still are my best Cuz!

Fact #7~ I can be a real ass when I am crossed. I can throw a red brick through your windshield and not bat an eye. I will lay on the ground and wait for you to bring your stupid self into my yard and then I will Jump Up and run at you with My brick drawn back and BAM! Right in the front seat with you. I will have a stack there if I need them. But I won't miss. I won't care if you cry. In fact if you cry I'll throw another at you because you are not only stupid but also a sissy.. I have no sense when you mess with my family or my kids. So Don't make me act stupid please.. I'm getting too old to learn new things and Jail is a place I haven't learned yet! .. But I will if I have too.

~~ I have shared facts with you today that I hope will bring a smile to your face. I love to help make folks smile. Everything I have said here is true.. even the one about the brick Yes I have done that too. I am of course a lot older and More settled now than I was then..( OK I'm still a crazy thing and I am even making me sick by telling y'all that I'm calm.. ) OK Now on to the last part of the rules!~

~ The list of those who I am tagging. I have enjoyed all of these blogs and really hope they join in for the tagging fun. Also I ask everyone who reads my blog to go to theirs and check them out. See if you agree that they are great bloggers!

Happy Independence Day!!

And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
~Lee Greenwood~~

We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls.
~Robert J. McCracken~

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.
~Franklin D. Roosevelt~

"The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men."
~ Samuel Adams~

Happy Fourth Of July!
When we were kids that would mean a Day trip to the Beach. Usually down to Hunting Island. Back then the Island was in good shape. That was before Erosion and Hurricane Hugo took it's tole on the tiny island.

That was before the Island was a State Park. You just drove right down to the ocean back then and parked. We would find us a shelter and Set up all of our food and then we would get our feet in the ocean. I say this that way because if we got in much over our ankles Mama would yell for us to come back. That was just for us smaller ones though.. I well remember David being way out in the water once with His friend Frank Northcutt and you could barely see their heads bobbing up and down in the waves. I hoped and prayed for the day I too would be FREE to go deep into the wonderful Ocean water. Now that I could swim safely out that far I choose not to. Who knows what might be waiting on an old Lady like me just beneath those wonderful waves?

Daddy would sometimes take one of us by the hand and lead the chain of kids a tiny bit deeper into the waves Letting us jump over them before they washed over our feet. The salty water would splash into our faces as we screamed and yelled like crazy. Hopping over the foaming waves as they barely covered our ankles.

Mama would sit in the shade of the palms along the edge of the beach and crochet or knit. She had long hair and would let it hang down her back that day. I would run to her every little while and dry my eyes on her long dark hair. Rubbing them against her head. She would laugh and say.. "Now don't go too deep"... And as I scampered back to the water she'd always say.. " Yall better watch for jelly fish!" I think we all used her hair as a towel because by the end of the day her hair would be damp and trying to curl into ringlets as it hung down her back. Even Now I can picture her there smiling as we wiped Our eyes on her Hair. Content to watch over us from the shade of a tree. Counting us every so often to be sure we were all still where she could see us.

We would come in and out of the water and eat Chicken and sandwiches. Drinking Cool-aid from the jugs in the cooler. We would toss bread crumbs to the sea gulls as they circled us calling in others from far away.Until there would be a cloud of birds overhead grabbing the crumbs we would toss to them.

I have almost always spent The Forth Of July on the beach. I was In New Mexico last year On this holiday and Today I am at home. Dave and I talked about going to the beach.. Somehow we aren't there. But I guess that's what Independence and freedom are all about. The fact that we have a choice in what we do.. How we worship and where we go and when we go there. And even in who we go with.

On July 4, 1776, America claimed independence from Britain and Democracy was born. Every day thousands of people leave their homes to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they too can take part in the American Dream. The United States is a nation made up of Many different types of people. From many different Cultures and Nations. Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate that freedom and independence with barbecues, trips, picnics, and family gatherings. Many will shoot fireworks tonight and I remind everyone to be very careful with those!

Today, On Independence Day, let us remember the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom. Let us remember those who have died for our rights.
Let us remember the families who have given sons and daughters for our freedoms. Let us also remember the great ideals that gave birth to this great nation.

Happy Birthday, America !!
Land Of the Free!
Home Of the BRAVE!
