Moody Monday!

"Growing up, I was the plain one. I had no style. I was the tough kid with the comb in the back pocket and the feathered hair." ~ Cameron Diaz

"A great social success is a pretty girl who plays her cards as carefully as if she were plain." ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

"It is impossible to think of any good meal, no matter how plain or elegant, without soup or bread in it.' ~ M. F. K. Fisher

Moody Monday has given us the word plain for today..

The picture above is of two apparently plain ladies.. One of them is me.. I bet you can guess that I am the fat and plain one.. the other is my cousin Sheron.. I love her to death.. she is my longest time friend.. I would be friends with her.. if she would let me.. even if we were no kin.. neither of us wear makeup.. well maybe every once in a great while we might.. but it has to be something special.. we have gray hair and we are too plain to get that erased.. we both laugh to loud and say what we think and don't care too much about our clothes.. we fish.. and garden and keep chickens and dogs and all the things that plain women do.. we like to grow our own food.. we wear tank tops and cut off blue jeans.. we go barefoot.. we do brush our hair.. but I can't tell you how long it's been since mine was actually styled.. Maybe I am a little plainer than her.. She doesn't write but she can do the best story jokes of anyone I know.. she is funnier than me.. But I will say for plain folks we are both pretty funny.....

Plain~
•unadorned, without decoration; simple and ordinary
•clear and obvious; easily understood
•not beautiful

just above is the definition of plain according to Moody Monday! I agree with the first two.. I am simple and ordinary.. I am clear.. I am easily understood because I speak my mind.. I have always considered myself.. just Plain old me.. I am what I am.. you get what you see.. Sheron fits that too..

but I don't always agree with the last part.. not beautiful.. some things even when they are plain have a deep or hidden beauty.. Sheron is such a beautiful person..
she loves her family and friends deeply.. she would do anything ..and I do mean anything.. for any of her loved ones..she is very artistic.. she decorates her yard for each holiday with decorations she has designed and made.. most are wooden cutouts that she has draw then cut out and painted.. Ghosts for Halloween and Candy canes hanging from every tree for Christmas and Hearts for Valentines day..

Remember that those of us who appear plain.. me and Sheron included.. are not always what we seem.. if you ever got a half a chance to see inside our lives you would realize that there is way more that you never knew..in some cases .. more than you could have imagined.. and behind our plain wrapper.. there might just be a very fancy person.. Have a great Night!!

The Last Thursday of This year.. So Long 2009!

"How few there are who have courage enough to own their faults, or resolution enough to mend them." ~ Benjamin Franklin

"Resolve to take fate by the throat and shake a living out of her." ~Louisa May Alcott

"I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's." ~ Henry Moore

**************************

First of all.. Let me wish everyone a safe and

Happy New Year!!

Please do NOT drink and drive..

I am so ready for this year to be over.. the economy hasn't been kind to many of the people I personally know.. friends and family have struggled with finding or keeping jobs.. cuts in pay have meant hard times for many people... Especially those with little children... though I don't think things will improve for most of us financially as far as wage increases or even an increase in hours worked or available jobs.. at least with the end of the year comes a hope for better things to come.. I am optimistic as I sit here in the quiet of my house and await the midnight hour alone...

I am alone by choice... I could have gone to a number of celebrations.. alone.. It seems I am a funny person and have a number of offers to " Come! Have a drink! Make us Laugh!".. I could have gone to my baby sister's house and laughed and talked and rested from the real world in the safety of her kitchen in a jacked up chair.. with something refreshing in a glass.. or a hot cup of coffee and something good to eat.. we might have even had some fireworks... maybe we could have wrote out names in the frosty night air with sparklers.. but it is raining... Dave is at work.. Emily needed some cooking done for a party that they were going to.. I could have gone out..
instead I made pasta salad for her friends party and then helped her bake a peach cobbler from Mama's family recipe.. I am happy to have ended the year sharing time with one of my children.. I will admit that it would have been great to have all of them here.. I wonder if that will ever happen again...

I could have gone to my best friends house and had a glass of watered wine with her.. we talked earlier and she was cooking something or other from her yard.. Thai people eat all kinds of things.. most of it green and all of it hot.. I asked what she was cooking and she said "egg.. fish.. something from my country.. good for you.. make you good luck.. we have wine but you only have water wine.. you drive.. I drink.." I promised to call her closer to midnight and we said a million I love you's.. I was sixteen when I met her.. she swore she was 16 too but she was actually 25 or 26.. she was my friend and many times my protector.. we had a large circle of old friends and of course through the years we added new ones.. except for two others that we rarely see.. and us.. the old circle is gone now.. all of them died too young.. she wonders aloud sometimes which of us will be next.. though I don't say it aloud I privately hope it will be me.. I can't imagine life without Thoi.. I am her longest time friend and she doesn't seem to know me by name.. she has always.. always called me Cassie.. I used to correct her but after a while she added the names of those who died to my name too so that I became Cassie-clifford-gayle-kaykay-linda-robert-bert-ernie-bigbird... you get the idea.. Now if she says Cassie I am happy with that.. One of our newer circle best friends recently told her that she shouldn't call me other folks... especially dead folks.. names.. she simply replied that Cassiekaykay doesn't mind.. the next day she called me to "come right now.. I need to see you face".... her version of come over quickly.. I need to talk to you about something.. face to face... turns out she does actually know my real name.. or at least what everyone calls me.. she spoke almost perfect.. teary eyed.. English as she made sure I wasn't mad with her for calling me a name as long as our friendship... I was just happy that she really does know who I am.. after 35 years it doesn't really matter what she calls me any more.. so many friends have gone on.. some were sick.. some died tragic accidental deaths.. at this point I'm just happy to have her..

I was also invited to my best ex-niece/in-law/forever-friend Sheri's house.. I can only imagine the wonderful foods and games of cards or marbles that they might be playing there.. knowing I don't like to drive at night I bet she would have sent someone for me or even come herself.. we would have definitely had loads to eat.. including her great pizza dip and pots of hot coffee.. she called and later even one of the younger party goers called saying I should hurry on out there..her Daddy could have skipped me over and over at Phase ten cards.. I could have joked and laughed and talked and ate.. they will all gather outside for the grand finally of fireworks just before midnight.. amid shouts of joy and peals of laughter they will light up the sky over their neck of the woods as the New Year rolls in.. I am usually there.. I will think of them tonight as the midnight hour draws near..

This year has been a year of losses for so many people.. jobs and incomes and material losses everywhere.. for our family and the families of a few friends it has also been a year of lost lives..

Even on Christmas Eve morning.. this year.. death paid our family an unexpected visit... My family has a way of adopting not only our spouses but their entire family.. if you had a gazillion siblings and married into our family we would claim them every one.. our children would call them Aunt or Uncle and we would gather for their weddings and births and on and on.. When my phone rang early on Christmas Eve I knew it wasn't good.. My phone doesn't ring early unless something is wrong.. I love all of my siblings.. I love their husbands and wives.. as I listened to My sister-in-law beg my brother not to cry till she told me that her own brother had died.. I wanted to sob myself.. I hurried to dress and go to her brother's house..I stayed with his wife and yes with his body.. until they finally came for him.. my children called him UNK.. he was my brothers best friend and room mate as they traveled together to work in far away cities.. 30 years they had been best friends.. Camella's only brother.. a husband to Paula .. a Father.. a Grandpa.. an Uncle.. and a dear friend.. only 48.. You will be missed my friend..

Quiet time has ended.. My Beloved Dave came in and filled the room and the house with sounds of news and advertisements from the stereo.. The neighbors have began with the fireworks a little early.. My roosters must not like the noise any more than I do.. they are crowing in time with the squeals of the pig and the loud barking of the neighborhood dogs.. all afternoon and night sirens have screamed up and down the highway that runs along the end of our dirt road.. the sound is a lonesome.. dreary sound.. as I listen to the sirens scream by on the way to the hospital that lays just across the lake and then hear the medi-vac copter hover over the airport across the road.. I say a silent prayer.. somewhere tonight another family will suffer a loss.. my own children are out there somewhere welcoming a New Year.. I will wait and hope that this year will be better than the last one.. Dave and I will watch some of the holiday Television and be thankful to be together.. we will ring in the New Year quietly.. we will think of those who have passed away this year.. we will hope for a better year for our children.. we will miss them and pray that they are safe tonight.. If you are celebrating please be safe.. please do NOT drink and drive.. Have a great Night and a wonderful New Year!

It is Tuesday and What Do I Have Here??

"Quicksilver is used for many purposes; without it, neither silver nor brass can be properly gilt."
~ Marcus V. Pollio

"Some minds improve by travel, others, rather, resemble copper wire, or brass, which get the narrower by going farther." ~ Thomas Hood

"The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time." ~ Henry David Thoreau

WHAT IS THAT THING???
First with the lid on.. then with the lid off and finally the stamp from the bottom of this weird little copper pot.. What in the world is it?

Tonight I have a rather odd item for you to look at and offer a guess as to what it is.. These pictures were sent to me by My best friend Deb.. She found this at a flea market and decided to buy it even though she nor her wonderful hubby Joe had any clue as to what it was.. she called me over the week-end and she and I discussed putting it on my Tuesday What is It blog just to see if any one out there could tell her what it was.... Tonight she sent these great photo's and I was excited to see one of these in this shape.. I do in fact know what it is and once many years ago I saw one used by an elderly lady that I visited every Sunday afternoon and read to in her home.... most of the ones that would be found now wouldn't be so well kept... I know that when I tell Deb tomorrow what it is that she bought she is going to look at it and say well Duh... It looks like exactly what it is.. Do you know what this item is? Have you ever seen one or maybe you even own one of these and might even still use it some times.. I will be busy trying to come up with a way to talk Deb and Joe into letting me have this one.. or maybe they will keep their eyes open for another one at the flea market... Look at it close and maybe you will be able to figure out what it is and/or what it was used for... Please offer a guess.. Deb will be delighted to find out what she bought and I will be delighted to get comments!! Thanks Deb for the Photo's and the jaunt down memory lane... Have a wonderful night!

Just a Little something....

"He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it."

"I don't believe it. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it."

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."

Wow~ Now how did I let Tuesday sneak up on me? Actually I did know it was Tuesday.. I had even planned a real good trick on my what is it post... Then my computer decided to be an arrogant and aggravating so and so whatever and hasn't been behaving very well today.. It decided that the camera I normally use was incompatible.. Me and my best friend Deb sat here and messed with it all day.. Of course we had to stop trying to eat and talk and laugh and look at the chickens and walk her poodle.. Dave and I are debating taking all the money we would normally spend on the kids at Christmas and buy us a new one.... Dave even has a grand scheme of having one Built to our own specifications just as if we were rich folks.. I can almost hear the children laughing even as I write this.. they know I wouldn't do that to them.. they think I will have their stuff for Christmas just as we always do.... just as we have since they were little kids instead of the grown folks they are now.... I am thinking though that this year we might fool them and go away someplace alone and hide out for the whole week of Christmas on their gift money... holding hands and walking along the shore in the early evening or having warm drinks in some beach front bar... We could.. but I know we won't.. we are good parents and I'll keep fighting this old Computer till it keels over and dies.. We have had terrible luck with computers.. I think we ~ or mostly me~ wear them slap dab out.. the last one before this one, we had so long that the letters were almost gone off the keyboard.. I never took typing in school so I have got to have the letters.. Dave being his wonderful and sweet self put them all back for me with a marker.. We use them all up before we are done with them.. The first one we bought from an auction.. old and well used.. the next one we bought new then the fan died and we had that fixed.. Later the mother board croaked and we used a spare that came from a dumpster for almost a year then bought this one... I still have the spare just in case.... This one came from a pawn shop... they said new but I don't think it was brand new.. Maybe almost new..This is our third Computer in 15 years.. Is that good or bad?

Lately we seem to be having bad luck all around.. the computer is an on going thing...a leak in the roof... the septic tank say it's on strike too.. I couldn't be a good worker and suit the Indians.. and I haven't found a new job... Maybe if my husband beat me enough.. At least that's what my ex boss says is the problem.. I wonder if it would help.. I'd be almost willing for Dave to spank me and see.. and if that doesn't help then we'll move on and know it's a lost cause..
Someone once told me that you could make money blogging... I think I have earned 11 cents for advertisements.. Maybe I'm doing it wrong... Maybe I am trying to hard to do things my way!

But today was a good day even though I didn't get some things done.. Dave, Deb and I had a wonderful lunch of spaghetti and a great ~ almost pizza/ more than bread~ that I found the recipe for this morning while doing my drops.. The dough was made in the bread machine.. a regular pizza dough except I used half wheat flour.. pressed into a pan and brush with olive oil then smothered and covered with very thinly sliced tomatoes, onions, and mushrooms... On top of all that was a generous sprinkling of Parmesan cheese and then some mixed grated cheese left over form this week ends Taco's.. I will never find that sight again and Deb took the printed recipe home with her.. But Lord It was delicious... I'm even sure it has a name but I don't know it.. Hopefully they dropped on me and I'll see them again tomorrow....

I have started another class on Allpoetry... this one is an acrostics class... I actually like writing acrostics..and so far..~ Knocking on wood~.. I am doing great in this class... I swore I wasn't taking any more because of the time involved but I couldn't stay away.. Our last class was on writing what is called shadow acrostics.. I wrote one and then decided to write another.. I couldn't decide which to turn in so I turned in both.. I know!! I was being weird and it wasn't even Wednesday... I am sharing both of them with you tonight.. Just a little something since I cheated you out of your chance to guess tonight.. I hope you enjoy them.. I hope your Tuesday was great! Have a great night!

Well~ Surprise ME!

"A story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because that is how life is - full of surprises." ~ Isaac Bashevis Singer

"A sudden bold and unexpected question doth many times surprise a man and lay him open."
~ Francis Bacon

"A true leader always keeps an element of surprise up his sleeve, which others cannot grasp but which keeps his public excited and breathless. " ~ Charles de Gaulle

Today I was pleasantly surprised to be given the Loyalty award By the great folks over at West Virginia Backroads..

Loyalty is something that is rare these days.. I have a few loyal friends.. I am loyal to more people than I feel are loyal to me.. I am not complaining; I just face the facts about how life really is.. People are too busy and too caught up in their own dramatic lives to really give more than a passing thought of the lives of other people.. They don't mean to discard our lives and problems.. it's just that they have so many of their own.. If you have a loyal friend you should count yourself very lucky...

“An ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness.”~ Elbert Hubbard

“When we are debating an issue, loyalty means giving me your honest opinion, whether you think I'll like it or not. Disagreement, at this stage, stimulates me. But once a decision has been made, the debate ends. From that point on, loyalty means executing the decision as if it were your own.”~ Colin Powell

“Lack of loyalty is one of the major causes of failure in every walk of life” ~ Napoleon Hill

Looking for Loyalty quotes I found a great many of them.. It seems that almost everyone worth quoting has at least one loyalty quote.. From Anne Landers to Winston Churchill to Stephen King.. each has said something quotable about loyalty..

The dictionary describes Loyalty as follows~

1. the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations.
2. faithful adherence to a sovereign, government, leader, cause, etc.
3. an example or instance of faithfulness, adherence, or the like: .

Following these guidelines I do know a few people who I would consider loyal.. I know or know the families of a few soldiers fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan right now.. to me that is one of the ultimate forms or loyalty to this country.. Actually I think any military personnel has to have that same loyalty as they could be called on to die for the rest of us at any time.. I know people who are loyal to their jobs and to their clubs or organizations.. I do my best to be loyal to my family and friends.. and to my Poetry group.. I thank everyone who is loyal to reading this blog and sharing my wild ideas and laughter! With that said I now pass tthis award to the following people~

1~) The wonderful folks over at Split rock- I love their Llamas
http://splitrockranchllamas.blogspot.com/

2~) To the great folks over at the Curly Cats - I love the cat tales! http://daisythecurlycat.blogspot.com/

3~) To A Lil enchanted- I love your outlook on life and things that go bump in the night! http://alilenchanted.blogspot.com/

4~) To Pj's Prose- I think we must be twins.. I thank you for you loyalty! http://pjtangel.blogspot.com/

5~)I Love the recipes anf great food at Cinnamon and Spice! http://cinnamonspiceandeverythingnice.blogspot.com/

I could think of another hundred blogs who each and all deserve this award.. I know I'm only allowed five but at least I know that each of these will choose five more and so on and so on.. eventually all of my choices will have been covered! Please visit these sights.. I am sure you will become loyal fans of them just as I have! Have a wonderful day!

Tuesday is here yet again.. do you know what I have?

"It's a wonderful feeling when your father becomes not a god but a man to you, when he comes down from the mountain and you see he's this man with weaknesses. And you love him as this whole being, not as a figurehead." ~Robin Williams

"Is the glass half full, or half empty? It depends on whether you're pouring, or drinking."
~ Bill Cosby

"Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance." ~ Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr.

Hi and welcome to another Tuesday in my world.. I do have an item for you to try and identify and I am sure someone will know what it is.. I thought I knew what it was.. I was wrong.. I have watched this item in my best friends house for many many years and wanted it.. I'm not sure why I wanted it but I did.. Some times when I visited her I asked her if I could have it yet and she always said " No, I need it for Temple! You No can have!" Then she would shake her head at me and Add.. " One day you have! Not today!" I quit asking about five years ago.. I still wanted it but I figured I would never
have it so I didn't want to be a pest.. She and I have played the can I have game for so many years now..

I first met her when I was newly married and sixteen.. she was well into her first marriage but new to American and twenty four.. she became my best friend.. My almost sister.. my protector!
I became her first American friend.. her "American Sister", her translator.. ( No I don't speak Thai!) Even though we spoke different languages.. we often finished each others sentences.. She would often say " what word I trying to say?" and somehow I would answer with the right word..

If she comes to my house and sees something she likes she usually leaves with it.. Sometimes I leave with what I want too; but with this item she always said 'NO!"... until today!

Early this morning she called because her lawn mower simply wouldn't crank.. she had pulled it enough times to sweat she explained " and still it never crank up!" She said she had cut with it yesterday and could a lawn mower break itself while it rested since yesterday? I will admit I smiled but I never laugh at her.. she is way to dear to me for that.. I knew she was leading up to her husband having died; ~ mine was now her nearest "sister's" Husband.. You see I have heard it so many times before.. Glancing at the clock to see if Dave could squeeze in a lawn mower repair project before his night shift I told her we would be over in about ten minutes... Then I went to break the news to him.. he gathered up a few tools and away we went.. (Yes! I know how lucky I am to have a wonderful; "Nearest sisters" .. husband!!) He never complains.. just gathers tools and away we go..

Dave was outside in the sweltering heat working on her cranky lawn mower and she was peeking out the window at him snickering as she informed me that he was "speaking to the lawn mower!" I watched her and wondered why she was reaching her hand up towards my much wanted basket.. I was simply dumbfounded when she handed it to me and said.. "today you carry with you..You my nearest sister!" She then told me about how she brought it with her from her country.. so many years ago and how she had had it so many years before that and " now she give to me.. You take care!".. She told a few funny tales of when she herself had used it in Thailand.. way back when she was a girl.... I didn't argue with her.. I just put it inside my big pocket book so that maybe if she didn't see it she wouldn't change her mind!!

What is this beautiful basket for? I am sure someone out there knows.. maybe you have one too.. It is not used for what I thought it was for.. But is is a very useful item.. Do you know what it's for? Please leave me a comment and share with me if you have one or if you have ever used one.. Maybe you just want to say hi and a comment can do that too....

I will treasure it forever.. I will most likely never use it for it's intended purpose.. Then again.. who knows maybe one day I might! You never can tell about us "nearest sisters"... we might do anything! Have a great day!
Patsy

Update!~ The basket is not a rice steamer.. In fact I myself thought it was a steamer for all these years as I have seen it and a larger one like it hanging in my friend's kitchen.. I finally asked yesterday what I was getting.. when she gave it to me.. This basket is a sticky rice serving basket... sticky rice being a certain kind of rice that is most often eaten by Thai people..Sticky rice is a staple in Northern Thailand and Northeastern Thailand where people eat it instead of long grain rice. Sticky rice is eaten with your hands. Many people roll it into little balls and dip into sauces.. The hand woven bottom basket holds the rice and the lid is another hand woven basket that fits over the bottom basket and is held together with red cord. The top basket is tucked under the bottom section to elegantly serve rice. Steamed rice will not stick to the rattan basket and the rattan actually adds a nice flavor to the rice. The rice steamer she uses looks like a spittoon with a straw hat on top of it.. As for the questions about why she would need it to take to Temple~ She has for years told me wonderful stories of going to temple every morning when she was a little girl.. How the people would bring food so the Monks could bless it and then also to feed the Monks who would pray all day.. Thoi was a bit of a rebel and would often get weary of waiting for the huge bells to ring for the people to eat.. After the Monks were fed the other food would be eaten by everyone else.. She talks about how poor people would gather there and that she knew that was sometimes their only meal of the day.. Apparently she had a soft spot for the children and would often times sneak into the Temple and with a nod from who I am assuming to be "the Head Monk in charge".. She would run and jump onto the rope and swing back and forth ringing the huge bells some times as much as an hour or more early.. she would then climb up in the bell tower to watch as the people hurried from great distances to the Temple.. wondering how they had been so off with the time.. She says the basket she gave to me was her own.. when she was a child.. she told me to~ "think of it as a box like today bad children take to school..." From her wonderful stories I believe that Thai Temple was and is not just a Church but a place where families and communities gather for many reasons.. She still carries food when she goes to Temple.. I do know they have many strict rules as to how you dress and behave while there.. Children can learn how to play musical instruments, dance and learn the Thai language; and history.. Families and friends can gather and eat and be with others who speak their own language..
I am glad everyone enjoyed My new what is it Item.. thanks to everyone who played along.. Have a wonderful day!
