Write a What?? What?? What??

"Exhilaration is that feeling you get just after a great idea hits you, and just before you realize what's wrong with it."
~ Rex Harrison

"No iron can pierce the heart with such force as a period put just at the right place."
~ Isaac Babel

"Let thy speech be short, comprehending much in a few words."
~ Ecclesiastics

I think you will agree that these forms of acrostic poems might make you stop and say ..
"write a WHAT!"
That was my first thought when I glanced at the assignment for my on-line poetry writing class at Allpoetry.com..
they were actually very easy to write and I'll bet that most of you could even write your own..
each one has a hidden word or message in them.
The first one.. a mesostich~ has a word hidden right down the middle.. I chose my own name and then wrote the poem to fit what I feel about my own name..
The second one was even easier.. known as a Telestich~ it has a message or a word along the ending letters of each line.. for this one I used the word spider as I sat and gazed at one out the window.. I am quiet fond of spiders.. especially the giant green garden spiders that share the spaces beneath the trees here with us.. I do in fact have a spider tattoo on my shoulder..
The final form for this assignment was called a Cross acrostic.. it has a message or word spread across the poem.. the first letter of the first line.. the second letter on the second line and so on and so on and so on.. I have a saying.. I don't get angry.. I get even.. and this third acrostic talks about the pleasure we can get from plotting a new evenness!
I hope you enjoy the short poems for tonight and I hope today was a good day for you..
I know I have been missing a lot lately.. I continue to plan for Emily's upcoming wedding..
Have a great Night!

Moody Monday!

"Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing." ~ Denis Waitley

"Making eye contact with adults while dressed as a clown is risky."
~ Doug Coupland

"Marrying for love may be a bit risky, but it is so honest that God can't help but smile on it."
~ Josh Billings
************************************

Today's word for Moody Monday is Risk Taking
(or what I personally would call risky!) Taking risks is defined as~
•exposure to the chance of injury or loss; hazard:
•put oneself in danger
•hazard; venture

Tana and Maya bravely climb to the top of the ancient sight where the Pueblo people once lived.. Maya doesn't seem to be afraid of anything at all.. At least not of heights.. she is an excellent climber of rocks and waterfalls as well as ladders!

Here are Anthony and Cooper also at Bandelier National Monument.. I was quick to inform them that I would have loved to have gone there... having read a book about the people who once lived there I would have loved to have seen it too.. on the other hand I am old and a lot less likely to take risks.. I may have just slowed them down.. maybe I'm getting to old for risky living..

New Mexico has a lot of rocks and I seem to have sons who think they need to climb every single one.. aside from being risky.. this photograph of Cooper standing on a giant rock reminds me just how small each of us are in the grand scheme of things..

I guess it is safe to say that I would never be able to climb to the top of those rocks.. but I do admit that the view from there has got to be spectacular.. I wonder if my sons could carry me up there? Or would that be too risky?
Have a great night!

Wednesday Arrives in a Whirlwind !!

"As long as you hate, there will be people to hate." ~ George Harrison

"The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that one is loved; loved for oneself, or better yet, loved despite oneself." ~ Victor Hugo

"People who count their chickens before they are hatched act very wisely, because chickens run about so absurdly that it is impossible to count them accurately."
~ Oscar Wilde

In the deepest shade of the cemetery.. just a few feet from the daily rush of traffic.. this barefoot angel gazes down onto the graves of a Mother and several tiny babes.. I found it odd that though someone cared enough to erect this beautiful statue and added wonderful words of love along the bottom.. that there is no husband buried here.. unless he would be 200 years old he was buried somewhere else.. a second wife perhaps?.. a wife who survived childbirth?.. As I stood there gazing up into the sweet face of this stone angel I silently said a prayer of thanksgiving that very few babies die these days trying to come into our world.. medical technology has improved a great deal in that area!

*****************************************

This week as Dave and I made the rounds looking for some good water shots I happened to think about "Our" pond... I guess I should explain that I don't actually own the pond or even any land around the pond.. all of that belongs to my uncle and a cousin or two.. But I own a share in the actual pond as does all of my cousins and kin... many many years ago a group of men decided to build a pond for private fishing and they fixed things so that legally every heir owned the right to fish or picnic or even swim if they wanted to in the muddy bottomed pond...
When I was a child this small pond was a big part of our lives.. the old red shed you can see across the pond used to be a busy concession stand where women handed hot dogs and hamburgers out through the double windows.. ice cold coke bottles crowded the washtubs on stands.. ready to quench the thirst of the handlers that waited in line to register their swimmers... excitement filled the air as the dogs barked and howled.. The swimmers were coon dogs and they were ready to race.. Uncle Oneal owned the raccoon that they would all follow across the water.. I was always so afraid that one of them would capture and eat the sweet little coon.. I was fully grown before I realized that nothing could have gotten to the fat coon that was more of a pet that anything else.. Uncle Oneal had built him a cage with it's own pontoons and he was perfectly safe behind his little box of strong wire that sat high above the water. Many times he was still dry as he was hauled onto land and hoisted into the tall pine tree where the dogs would bark and leap into the air as they tried to reach him.. They were champion hunting dogs and they put on quiet a show as they raced over and over until a winner was declared and someone was handed a handsome purse for the winning dog.. then the owners would crowd around the hitching posts to bargain for the sale or swap of a dog..
At other times Daddy and Mama would pack up a picnic and we would go down to the pond and play with our cousins and maybe even catch a few fish... No one lived back there then and we would search the sandy road from the pond to the blackberry thicket for arrow heads and bits of colored stone. I still have a pink rock in my jewelry box that I picked up there when I was about seven years old. I used to think it was a special magic rock.. Sheron assured me that it was.. and I trusted anything at all that Sheron told me.. she was and still is my hero!
Dave and I intended to just stop and make a few pictures for Watery Wednesday.. as soon as we parked under the giant pine tree I knew that I had to get out and walk around.. we walked all around the pond crossing the old damn and peeking into the old concession stand.. the rusted old wood stove still sits where it always did.. the windows have been all knocked out by vandals and it appeared that at some point someone may have taken up squatters rights there.. I was lost in thought about all the coon dog races I had been to there when Dave asked me "Why is there a rim on a pole?".... he had found the pulley that hoisted the sweet Raccoon up into the air then dragged him across the water.. I has thrilled that it was still there..
I wanted to climb up and sit on the platform where Uncle Neal used to give the signal for the dogs to be released... Dave was worried that the poles or platform could be rotten so we stayed on the ground.. and wandered around holding hands as I tried to explain Coon dog racing to him.. we looked out over the swamp from the damn and wondered what the green blobs were that were bobbing up and down along the edge of the water.. we made a few photo's and then realizing that we had been there for several hours we headed back around the pond and home.. I couldn't help but look back at the old red shed building with longing for a ice cold bottle of coke and a fire grilled hot dog.. or maybe a moon pie.....
********************************
~ I have been feeling like I am living in a whirlwind.. Emily 's wedding day draws closer and closer and I am so NOT ready to marry off my baby.. I love Luke but Emily was just born last week wasn't she?.. I was just fishing in the old pond and picking up pink stones a few weeks before that!.. I have a reception to plan and cook for..I am told that I have to wear a dress.. I better add that to my "to do" list!. and just so I am clear on this.. Do I have to be nice to everyone at my only daughters wedding?? I mean just so I'm clear..
Spring here means babies hatching.. we had 20 chicks and 17 quail to hatch all at once this week..
Cooper and his friends were amazed at the fat chicks that rolled out of the tiny eggs.. they wondered how the chick ever fit inside the egg.. even now I smile as they chirp and peep from their warm boxes in the next room..
~ Cooper has come home from New Mexico and is here with Dave and I.. we are glad he is home but I had forgotten that other people here means noises that I had forgotten about.. every time he walks up I jump. I am used to being here alone and then at night he walks up in a hoodie with the hood on his head and scares the bejesus out of me.. and now I ask you.. what's new in your life? Have a great night!

It's Thursday.. Time for me to Thunk!

"I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final
exam. " ~ George Carlin

"Faith is an oasis in the heart which will never be reached by the caravan of thinking."
~ Kahlil Gibran

"It is neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so."
~ William Shakespeare

Welcome to the February 18Th version of Thursday Thunks!
(which they almost always seem to post on Wednesday)
Where they make you think a little bit before you blog!

Yes! they do have rules~~They pick a subject, and your job is to interpret it anyway you want. Write about it on your blog... simple as that. Maybe you can interpret it as a picture - they really don't care! Please only leave a link if you have written a Thursday Thunks post. Please mention them in your post, and link back to the blog. Don't forget to go visit the other participants' blogs. Read and comment about all their Thursday Thunks! That's what all this is about after all, isn't it? And this final one is not their rule but mine.. Enjoy yourself!

This week we will answer some crazy questions brought to you by Berleen's demon spawns (teenagers), the color of snowflakes, and the number 7200.

They are 15 and 13... that is your warning.

1. Why are computer mouses called mouses? ~ I have no idea about this one unless it's because they are pests.. I call mine names most days..they stick and do exactly what you hoped they wouldn't.. mine won't click to save my life sometimes and then appears to click on what it wants too.. Maybe I should have just looked this up..
2. If a guy has no money and he goes into a bar does he get kicked out?~ not unless he tries to order a drink.. on the other hand he doesn't get a girl either.. or a drink.. maybe he can eat the free peanuts.. do bars still have free peanuts?
3. Why does Taryn hate rat terrier puppies?~ I'd have to ask Taryn that.. personally I love most puppies.. I have a new puppy myself.. he's a mutt..
4. Why do polar bears not moo? ~ cows moo.. Polar bears roar and growl.. I love them though and think they are beautiful.. When Mason and I went to New Mexico the second time he came home and told everyone that he and I "swam with the polar bears at the Albuquerque Zoo" it was blazing hot and if we wouldn't have become bear fodder I might have given it a shot.. they have the coolest Polar bear exhibit I have ever seen..
5. Why do people let doves fly at their weddings?~ It is said that doves bring good fortune and a happy home for newlyweds.. Doves also choose one mate and mate for life.. I have a pair of doves but I am beginning to wonder if they like each other.. maybe they don't like me OR even their cage.. I hoped they would lay eggs and multiply.. so far they just coo at me..

6. Why are no two snowflakes alike? ~ I am going to say because God made them all different so that we would have something to wonder about.. sorta like each of us are different and unique in our own way..
7. Why do people want things that don't work? (ads in newspapers - like junk batteries wanted)~ I actually know this because I read about it on a blog.. people use old batteries for solar power systems in their homes.. They have a solar panel that charges the batteries then they watch TV.. compute.. even cook with free power.. and let me add that if My electric bill continues to rise I might have one of those please give me your junk battery adds myself!
8. Why do we have to wear shoes at school?~ I hate shoes too.. maybe so other folks can't see how ugly some people's feet are? Come on no9w.. you know you have seen people with ugly toes or scaley feet..
9. Why do people wear socks with sandals?~ Hmm I don't know<~~~ glad you can't see me with my toe socks and flip flops!
10. Why do we always want bear hugs? ~ I don't.. bears scare me..Haha..

11. Why do dogs lick people's toes? And why do they like to lick lotion?~ what kind of dog do you have that just licks stuff? That is why I don't give dog sugar to my pup.. no telling where his mouth was last!
12. Why do people get this little thing pierced ~ as she points to the little thing on her ear. ~ I got my ears pierced because I liked wearing ear rings.. now I'm older I barely ever remember to put any thing in the holes.. what I hate is when folks have straws or other stuff in their ear holes.. I saw a girl at the mall last week with the ties from bread bags in her ears..
13. Why do dogs like to eat out of litter boxes?~ yuck.. glad I don't have a litter box!
14. Have you ever eaten a sandwich that had really weird things in it? ~ No but my nephew once brought me coffee with bird seed in it..
15. Why isn't snow purple?~ because it is white... I have seen yellow snow once though..

16. When the earth was made why was the sky made blue? ~ I think maybe things were made different colors so we could tell them apart and plus to give us something to ask questions about when we got thirteen and fifteen!
17. Why do cats like laser lights?~ I think maybe cats are just crazy like that..
18. When someone invented Santa Clause, why did they make him fat?~ Jolly and round sound better than jolly and skinny.. plus how could a skinny belly shake like jelly?
19. What do you think Santa does when he's not making toys?~ I think he plants a summer garden and reads to his grandkids and cuddles with the Mrs! Plus sneeking around looking for bad kids takes a lot of time!... or maybe he goes to the bar and eats free peanuts?
20. Why is it that suddenly I don't care anymore? ~ I don't know.. suddenly I could care less too!
21. Why are the healthiest things for you most expensive?~ I'd like to know this myself.. maybe when you find out you will share with the rest of us!

Wow.. for teens they ask some pretty tough questions.. I did my best to keep from being a smart hiney since I am figureing the kids might read this.. wouldn't it be something if that affliction stuck and I quit being a smart butt forever? ~~~> shuddering<~~~ could that happen? Nah.. I am me and a smart butt too.. Have a good night!

What is new in MY World!

"Well-timed silence hath more eloquence than speech." - Martin Fraquhar Tupper

"I am never afraid of what I know." - Anna Sewell

"Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about." - Oscar Wilde

Have you seen birds in your neck of the woods already? Every morning I wake to the sounds of my own birds.. for the last few mornings I have listened as not only my own finches.. who are nesting.. sing... but also a number of yard birds singing a good morning as well..

I love birds.. I do have a few caged birds besides the chickens.. I have finches and dove.. and cockatoos.. I speak to them and they sing to me..

for several mornings now I have had early bird guests at the feeders just outside of my glassed in greenhouse-room-porch... they sing and chatter from their side of the glass.. My birds sing and chatter back.. one bird.. Lewis.. will stretch and show his beautiful wings to the wall of glass.. I think he might be saying that they are too near to his home..

If you look very close at the above photo you can just barely see a white dove sitting there.. she is rather hard to pick out.. every time I aimed at her with the camera she ducked down into the nest.. her mate was way over in the chicken yard gathering bits of fuzz and fluff.. they darted back and forth most of today.. flitting around.. avoiding me and the camera but stopping on top of the caged Dove every once in a while to coo back and forth with them..

Red birds and sparrows and house wrens.. some on the feeder and others ruffling around on the ground below.. the red birds tend to wait on the tree until there are a few of them and then they all swoop in together and take control of the feeders..

I was thinking that it was a little early for the spring birds to be back.. maybe they know more about the weather than I do?.. maybe they came back early to get the best birdhouse or nesting spot?.. But for what ever reason my yard has been filled with birdsong for more than a week..

I will set out saucers of water and clean and refill all the feeders.. I want my feathered friends to feel welcome when they visit here in My World! Have a great night!

Watery Wednesday #73

My Grand-daughter.. Maya.. enjoys an early morning stroll along the shore..

******************************************

My Sepia Scenes photo today is of a tree.. I love trees..
This old tree has shaded the Church Yard for many...
many years..

**************************************************
Today's three words are frantic.. lurch.. odor..

I will share with you a true story of a strange happening in my life.. and of a voice I still listen for in the darkest moments of my life...
Once upon a time.....

Frantic with fear I struggled to escape the world of dreams.. the odor of fire had pulled me from the sandman's grasp.. I felt my belly lurch as I heard my child cry out in the darkness.. Our house was old and built from "fat lighter" wood.. I knew we only had moments before the old house would become an inferno.. Suddenly I heard a ladies voice telling me to hurry outside that my son waited for me.. I ran into his closet sized nursery and from there out the side door... he was sitting quietly on the quilt my Grandma had made for him before he was born.. Looking around my heart fluttered as I realized that My husband was still inside the house.. I didn't want to leave my baby alone but I knew that I had to go back inside and find his Daddy... I carried him to the car and put him safely into the little basket that he would sleep in when we were riding.. I squeezed him tight and promised his smiling face that I would be right back..

I was just about to step into the cloud of smoke pouring from the side door when a black-faced..
soot covered.. apparition stumbled out the door.. I recognized the pajamas sticking to his soaking wet legs as those belonging to my Husband.. he said the fire was finally out.. A log had rolled from the fireplace he said.. knocking over the safety screen and setting the floor on fire.. I assured him that the baby was alright.. Suddenly he said.. " Where is the Lady that woke me up.. I wanted to thank her!" We never did see the Lady who's sweet voice saved out little family that night.. we never decided who had carried our child to safety.... neither of us had.. The smoke cleared after a few hours and even though we fixed the hole in the living room floor the very next day.. I was afraid of the house.. with no heat other than the fireplace I was scared it would catch fire again.. I couldn't explain the voice that had woke us both up..we both knew the baby hadn't carried himself out to the backyard... I couldn't be sure we would be so lucky the next time.. I couldn't believe that a passer by would wake us up and then leave.. could it have been an angel?.. Sometimes in my darkest of dreams I will hear a voice singing..calling to me.. drawing me from the troubled dream... soothing... It is always the same voice.. Even now when I feel afraid I listen for that sweet calm voice.. I will always wonder.. Could it have been an angel?
Have a great Night!
